Jurisdictions
Coverage is uneven across Canada, and the reason is almost never this pipeline. Most provinces publish no corporate register at all; of the two that do, one cannot be used. Each row says what is actually available.
| Jurisdiction | Records | What it publishes |
|---|---|---|
| Canada (federal) | 1,646,120 | Corporations Canada publishes the full federal register in bulk. This is the spine of the corpus. |
| British Columbia | 208,467 | Gap. BC Registries runs OrgBook, which is licensed "access only" and cannot be republished. Ten cities publish business licences openly and all ten are used: Vancouver, Victoria, Burnaby, Kelowna, Coquitlam, Langley, New Westminster, Prince George, Squamish and Maple Ridge. |
| Ontario | 158,409 | Gap. Ontario publishes no corporate register at all. Its organisations appear here only through federal incorporation and Toronto business licences. |
| Alberta | 81,232 | No provincial register published. Calgary, Edmonton and Lethbridge publish business licences, and Calgary alone publishes the builder on every building permit. |
| Québec | 35,462 | Gap. Québec publishes a full register, and it is refused here on licence grounds — CC BY-NC-SA. What stands in for it is municipal: Montréal’s register of 54,439 food establishments, and its supplier list, which is the only lawful route here to a Québec enterprise number. |
| Northwest Territories | 906 | No territorial register published. Federal sources only. |
| Manitoba | 890 | No provincial register published. Winnipeg licenses twelve specific activities and publishes them, which is a few hundred businesses rather than a city — everything else here is federal. |
| Saskatchewan | 543 | Gap. No provincial register published, and no municipal one either. Regina publishes 1,379 datasets and not one is a business register; Saskatoon publishes 19, all transit and roads, under no open data licence at all. Searched 2026-09-06. |
| Nova Scotia | 411 | No provincial register published. Federal sources only. |
| New Brunswick | 401 | No provincial register published. Federal sources only. |
| Nunavut | 126 | No territorial register published. Federal sources only. |
| Prince Edward Island | 63 | No provincial register published. Federal sources only. |
| Newfoundland and Labrador | 53 | No provincial register published. Federal sources only. |
| Yukon | 2 | No territorial register published. Federal sources only. |
Ontario and Québec are roughly six in ten Canadians. Ontario publishes nothing to read; Québec publishes everything but under terms that would impose non-commercial restrictions on the federal data it was joined to. Neither is a technical problem, and neither is hidden here — both are recorded against the source that causes them.
Where a province is closed, the cities inside it are often not. Québec’s register is refused and Montréal’s is open, so 54,439 Québec establishments and 15,881 Québec suppliers are here anyway — with their provincial enterprise numbers — obtained from a publisher whose licence permits it rather than from the one whose licence does not. The source registry.
